Guest Lecture: PNG’s Macroeconomic Outlook and Banking Sector

Our School of Economics and Development Studies recently hosted an insightful guest lecture on real-world economic perspectives, giving students an opportunity to engage directly with current developments shaping Papua New Guinea’s economy.

Held on 11th August 2026 at IBSUniversity, Port Moresby, the guest lecture focused on “Macroeconomic Trends and the Role of the Banking Sector in Economic Development” and featured Mr. Moses David, Senior Economist atKina Bank Limited, as the guest speaker.

Mr. David provided students with valuable insights into Papua New Guinea’s current macroeconomic environment and the factors influencing the country’s economic outlook.

His presentation examined a range of important issues, including economic growth prospects, major resource projects, financial deepening, private-sector credit and foreign exchange management.

Particular attention was given to the role of the banking sector in supporting economic activity, especially through increased access to finance and credit for businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The discussion also highlighted the importance of a strong and responsive financial sector in supporting sustainable economic development.

One of the key areas of discussion was Papua New Guinea’s emerging resource boom and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the national economy.

Students explored concepts such as exchange-rate appreciation and Dutch disease, gaining a deeper understanding of how large-scale resource developments can influence other parts of an economy.

The lecture also touched on State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) and utilities reform, providing students with a broader perspective on the structural issues that can influence economic performance and development.

These discussions were particularly relevant in helping students understand the relationship between resource development, government policy, financial markets, businesses and the broader economy.

For the students of the School of Economics and Development Studies, the guest lecture provided an opportunity to move beyond theoretical concepts and examine how economic principles apply to real situations in Papua New Guinea.

Hearing directly from an experienced economist allowed students to gain practical perspectives on the challenges faced by policymakers, financial institutions and businesses operating within PNG’s economic environment.

The session demonstrated the value of connecting academic learning with professional experience, giving students a more practical understanding of economics, banking and development.

IBSUniversity continues to recognise the importance of engagement between higher education institutions and industry.

Guest lectures and industry engagements provide students with opportunities to interact with professionals, ask questions, explore contemporary issues and gain insights that complement their academic studies.

As IBSUniversity continues to prepare students for the demands of the professional world, initiatives such as this reinforce an important message: Learning becomes more meaningful when students can connect knowledge with the realities of the world around them.
