Success Built On Grit: Kenneth Japeth’s Journey from Gardener to IT Graduate

Success is rarely handed to anyone—it’s built through perseverance, determination, and discipline. These three traits, when combined, become a powerful force, enabling individuals to overcome obstacles, take on challenges, and turn dreams into accomplishments. Regardless of the path you take—starting a new chapter in life, chasing a long-held dream, or stepping out of your comfort zone—success demands the ace of spades: the grit to persist and the courage to push through every challenge.

One such inspiring example of this is the story of Kenneth Japeth, a young man from Enga Province who demonstrated how perseverance and determination, fuelled by discipline, can completely shift the variables of life.

From Gardener to IT Graduate: Kenneth Japeth’s Inspiring Journey

Kenneth’s story began in 2021 when he completed Grade 12 at Porgera Secondary School. Despite his dream of furthering his education, he faced a roadblock—the opportunity to continue his studies was scant. Refusing to let this setback define him, Kenneth made a courageous choice to leave his home province and travel to Port Moresby, determined to find a way to achieve his goals.

Arriving in the capital city in 2022, Kenneth was faced with uncertainty. It was a year of challenges as he searched for work, driven by the belief that hard work and patience would open doors. His strength of character paid off in January 2023 when he secured a job as a gardener and cleaner at IBS College of TVET, a technical and vocational education institution in Port Moresby, under the IBS umbrella.

For many, this might have seemed like an endpoint—a job to get by. But for Kenneth, it was the linchpin of what lay ahead. His diligence and work ethic did not go unnoticed. The management at IBS College of TVET recognized his potential and strong desire to continue his education. Seeing an opportunity to support his ambitions, they gave him a chance to enroll in the Certificate III and Certificate IV in Information Technology programs while continuing his job.

Balancing Work, Study, and Life

Balancing full-time work and studies may be challenging, but Kenneth managed it with consistency and a clear sense of purpose.

The college adjusted his work schedule, giving him Fridays for gardening while the rest of the week was spent assisting in the IT department, library, and administration. It was a careful balancing act that called for well-organized time management and a determination to succeed.

Kenneth’s journey from gardener to IT graduate, culminating in his graduation on 18 December 2024, is like a seed planted in adversity, growing steadily and reaching full bloom through hard work and tenacity.

A Message of Encouragement

Kenneth’s unique story tells us that, regardless of shape and size, every opportunity has the potential to lead you to greatness. It’s all about your dreams and aspirations and what you’ve set out to accomplish. He shares this advice, “Take every opportunity that comes your way, and never be ashamed of the job you’re offered. Be hardworking, and build your dreams from there.”

Kenneth’s story prompts us to consider our own journeys. What could we accomplish if we faced challenges with the same resolve? Success, after all, is not merely a matter of talent—it lies in the determination and perseverance to move forward.
