For Paul Teddy Imatana, education has been a journey of faith, perseverance, continuous learning and growth. Today, he serves as Team Leader – SCU Admissions at IBSUniversity, but his journey began far from where he is now.

Paul attended Bwagaioa Primary School on Misima Island, later continuing to Misima High School before completing Grades 11 and 12 at Wesley Agro Secondary School in Salamo, graduating in 2017. After completing secondary school, he was not selected for his preferred further education program. As a result, his father sent him to Port Moresby, where he attended a four-month short course at Mapex Training Institute, which he completed in 2018 and returned home to Misima Island, he then returned to Port Moresby in 2019. It was during a visit to IBS College of TVET with his niece that he made an unexpected decision that would change the direction of his life.

He enrolled in Certificate 4 in Human Resource Management, inspired by his aunt, Tusy Paulisbo, an HR professional. He completed his studies in 2020 despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, Paul dreamed of becoming a successful HR professional, supporting people in the workplace, building a meaningful career, supporting his family and continuing to learn.

His journey with IBSUniversity began in 2022 as a Library Assistant, his first permanent role. He later progressed to Enrolments Officer in 2023, SCU Program Coordinator in 2024, and in 2025 became the first SCU Admissions Team Leader.

Looking back, Paul says his experience at IBSUniversity taught him discipline, professionalism, responsibility, communication and the importance of working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

“Professionally, it is the students I work with who have made me who I am today.”

Working closely with students has become one of Paul’s greatest motivations. Seeing students overcome challenges, succeed in their studies and pursue their aspirations inspired him to continue his own education. He eventually decided to pursue a degree while continuing to work at IBSUniversity.

Balancing full-time work, studies and personal responsibilities was not always easy. Paul relied on discipline, time management, faith and the support of his family, colleagues, managers and mentors. He is particularly grateful to his manager, Winnie Wenzel, and SCU Programs Manager, Rahpalea Sigamata, for their guidance and encouragement throughout his professional growth.

His perseverance was recognised when he received the High Achieving GPA / Academic Excellence Award from Southern Cross University Bachelor of Business Major in Entrepreneurship and Management.

For Paul, the achievement was especially meaningful because he had once considered himself an average student. The award became proof that where you start does not determine where you can go.

However, the achievement came during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Paul received news of his academic recognition on the same day his father passed away, 7th July 2026. His father had been his biggest supporter, mentor and source of encouragement, teaching him the importance of hard work, humility, perseverance and never giving up.

Paul remembers wishing his father could have been there to celebrate the achievement. He believes the award also reflects his father’s sacrifices and belief in his potential.

Through his journey, Paul has learned that education does not stop with a Certificate course. Instead, it can become the foundation for greater opportunities.

His message to students is simple:

“Never underestimate your potential or allow your current circumstances to define your future.”

Paul’s story is a testament to what can happen when faith, determination, hard work and continuous learning come together. From a Certificate 4 student from IBS College of TVET to a professional, Team Leader and Academic Excellence Award recipient, his journey demonstrates that an average student can achieve extraordinary things when they believe in themselves, keep learning and never give up. His Favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ,” became a source of encouragement and strength throughout his journey.
