Empower Women Through Financial Literacy Training

The School of Economics and Development Studies successfully conducted a Financial Literacy Training session for women, aimed at equipping participants with practical knowledge in savings and budgeting to strengthen their pesonal financial management.

The training attracted a total of 25 participants, comprising 24 women and one male participant. Participants came from a range of educational backgrounds: 32% had attained primary education, 32% high school education, 32% tertiary education, and 4% had no formal education – reflecting the training’s broad accessibility and relevance across different levels of learning. The training was facilitated by Ms Everlyn Iniga Norman, a Lecturer from the School of Economics and Development Studies.

Throughout the session, participants engaged actively in discussions on savings, budgeting, and money management. At the close of the training, many expressed heartfelt appreciation for the knowledge shared, describing the session as an “eye-opener.” Several participants shared that while they earn income through market sales, wages, or salaries, they had struggled to effectively manage their hard-earned money. They noted that the training had shifted their perspective, and they left committed to applying what they had learned in their daily financial decisions.

The training also has special encouragements from the Senior Lecturer, Dr. Periyasamy Palani; a Tutor, Mr. Junior Yama; the Head of School, Dr. Sooriyakumar Krishnapillai; and the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sujitha Anthony, all of whom encouraged participants to embrace regular saving habits and disciplined financial planning as a pathway toward long-term financial stability.

Training materials used during the session were provided by the Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion (CEFI), whose contribution was gratefully acknowledged by the organizers.

This initiative reflects IBSUniversity’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and empowerment, particularly in equipping women with the practical skills needed to take charge of their financial futures.
