Reasons: Why They Matter and How to Use Them

Have you ever wondered why you do the things you do? Like, why do you brush your teeth every morning? Or why do you study hard for that big test?
The answer is simple: “reasons”. Reasons are like the secret sauce that drives our actions. They’re the “whys” behind everything we do.
What Exactly Are Reasons?
Imagine craving a slice of pizza. You don’t just magically get it and devour it like a robot! There’s always a reason—maybe you’re hungry, or it simply looks too delicious to resist.
Reasons are those thoughts and feelings that motivate us to take action. They can be big or small, simple or complex – each with its own set of moving parts.
Where Do Reasons Come From?
Reasons come from many places, and the following are probably the main areas where our reasons exist:
(a) Our needs
We all have basic needs like food, water, and shelter. These needs give us reasons to work, earn money, and build a home.
(b) Our values
What’s important to you? Is it kindness, honesty, or creativity? Your values guide your decisions and give you reasons to act in certain ways.
(c) Our goals
Do you want to become a doctor, a musician, or a famous chef? Your goals allow you to study hard, practice, and work towards your dreams.
(d) Our emotions
Emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and fear can also influence our reasons. For example, if you’re feeling sad, you might seek comfort from friends or family.
How Reasons Influence Our Lives
Reasons are super powerful! They define our choices, influence our behavior, and ultimately determine the course of our lives. And whether we choose to move forward or hold on to our past, understanding the nature of reasons is the icing on the cake:
- Positive Reasons – If you have strong reasons for doing something, you’re more likely to succeed. For example, if your reason for studying is to get into your dream college, you’ll be more motivated to put in the effort.
- Negative Reasons – Sometimes, reasons can hold us back. For example, if you’re afraid of failing, you might avoid trying new things.
How to Use Reasons to Your Advantage
- Identify your reasons – What are your goals? What are your values? What motivates you? Take some time to think about the reasons behind your actions.
- Set clear goals – Having clear goals gives you strong reasons to work hard and stay motivated.
- Be attentive to positive reasons – Surround yourself with positive influences and concentrate on the benefits of your actions.
- Challenge negative reasons – If fear or doubt is holding you back, try to identify and challenge those negative reasons.
Bottom Line
Reasons are the mother board behind everything we do. Nonetheless, when we understand our reasons and use them to our advantage, we are guaranteed to make better choices, achieve our goals, and, as one would have it, live a purposeful life. So, next time you’re faced with a decision, take a moment to think about your reasons. It might just surprise you where they lead you!
Belated Merry Christmas to you, you, and you 🫵 Wishing you a prosperous 2025 and beyond! Cheers 🥂🎉
