IBSUniversity continues to work towards enriching our academic offerings and providing students with the knowledge they need to be agents of change and build our young nation. As part of our commitment to providing value-driven programs in education, we are expected to introduce a comprehensive understanding of social justice and we are excited to announce that the introduction of a Human Rights foundation unit is being actively researched.

On Monday, February 24th, Vice Chancellor Dr. Ramachandran Arunachalam and Pro-Vice Chancellor Mr. Jobin Scaria warmly welcomed the team involved in this initiative. Dr. Wickramaratne, an expert in the field and team leader of an EU project, along with Mrs. Patricia Gure and the team from the Human Rights Secretariat—a key branch within the Department of Justice & Attorney General, PNG. These prominent individuals are leading the efforts to introduce this foundation unit to our university. Dr. Wickramaratne, a Senior Legal Expert and his team are assisting the Human Rights Secretariat team in the establishment of a National Human Rights Institute. in PNG.
The Human Rights foundation unit is being considered for introduction as early as the second semester of this academic year. This unit will aim to provide students with a deep understanding of fundamental human rights principles, international conventions, and how to apply them when needed. By introducing this course, we hope to equip students with the critical skills needed to address social justice challenges on locally and nationally.

Before moving forward, Dr. Wickramaratne and Mrs.Gure and the team are conducting thorough research to ensure the course is designed in a way that is both educationally effective and relevant to today’s societal issues. Once their research is complete, another meeting will be held to finalize the details and set the timeline for the course’s introduction.
This initiative shows IBSUniversity’s continuous effort and passion to provide responsive and value-programs that stimulate personal development in individuals who will be prepared to lead and advocate for change in our young nation. We are confident that with the support of our external partners, the possibility of offering this foundational unit will shape our students’ understanding of justice, equality, and human rights.
